Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce held its first cash mob event on Sept. 17 in Schuylkill Haven.
Chamber members gathered outside the Walk In Art Center and then made their way on foot to the surprise business, Queen Bee Boutique. Once the people arrived, they announced they were part of the chamber’s cash mob and then supported the small business by shopping there.
In its announcement of the program, the chamber said the cash mob is similar to a flash mob, but with money being spent. Each month the chamber will pick a secret small business to surprise in different communities.
As the idea is to surprise the businesses, participants in the cash mob are only given a meeting location. They will then walk a short distance to the secret business. The chamber added that one month the secret business may be a retailer and the next could involve participants enjoying lunch.
