The Schuylkill County Conservancy is presenting the following events in September:
Sept. 21: Schuylkill County Sketchers with naturalist Audrey Wells, 10-11 a.m., Sweet Arrow Lake County Park Clubhouse, Pine Grove. A free walk for people who enjoy nature and creativity. Sept. 22: Annual dinner-meeting, 5:30-8:30 p.m., Sweet Arrow Lake County Park Clubhouse. Guest speaker will be Bob Sprague, president of the Native Orchid Conference. His topic will be “A Conservation Project in Progress in a Most Unlikely Place – The Valmont Bog.” There’s an unusual site in Luzerne County where 10 native orchid taxa and other rare wildflowers have been documented. It has become an international curiosity and important study site. RSVP due by Sept. 13. Cost is $30 for members and $35 for nonmembers. Sept. 28: Guided Field Trip to a Managed Woodlot, 9:30-11:30 a.m. The tour will begin at the home of Stephen Zuk, 81 Old Mill Road, Pottsville. The property is located just south of the Cressona Mall along the railroad tracks. Access to Old Mill Road is next to the Burger King in Schuylkill Haven. Follow Old Mill Road for a quarter-mile mile to the first house on the left. The group will car pool to the nearby woodlot. Learn how to identify the signs of an unsustainable forest and what steps that were taken to make this woodland sustainable. Tour is free and open to the public. Dress appropriately for weather and a forest setting. Severe weather cancels the event. Updates are provided on the Schuylkill County Conservancy’s calendar which is located at ourschuylkill.org . Sept. 29: Mushroom Discovery Walk, 1-2:30 p.m., Frog Hollow Nature Area. Frog Hollow Nature Area. Presented by Karen Rich-Beall of Eastern Penn Mushroomers. Find the amazing and beautiful fungi that inhabit the forest of Frog Hollow. No dogs allowed for this walk. Trails are uneven and could be wet.
