Schuylkill County organization seeks volunteers for therapeutic horse riding

Horses & Horizons Therapeutic Learning Center Inc. is looking for volunteers to assist with therapeutic horseback riding lessons for children and adults with disabilities.  Experience with horses and/or people with disabilities is helpful but not necessary.

The organization is preparing to begin its summer lessons. A training session for new volunteers is scheduled for June 22 from 1 to 5 p.m: at the center, located 10 miles south of Tamaqua near Route 309.  Lesson volunteers must complete this hands-on training.  The summer session begins July 8.and runs for eight weeks.

HHTLC offers therapeutic riding lessons on Monday and Wednesday evenings for individuals with disabilities. Volunteers are asked to give one or two hours on either lesson night for the eight-week session.

Volunteers must be 14 or older. New volunteers are trained as side aides. Volunteers with horse experience are trained to be horse leaders for lessons. The organization welcomes the volunteer assistance of professionals in physical, occupational, speech, and behavior therapy.

HHTLC also needs people to assist with grounds maintenance, cleaning saddles and bridles and fundraising.

HHTLC serves clients with a wide variety of disabilities.  Lessons are designed to be therapeutic and fun.
