Schuylkill Haven enters winter road maintenance agreement

Schuylkill Haven Borough Council on Aug. 21 approved a winter maintenance service agreement intended to ensure an efficient and effective maintenance program during the winter.

The five-year agreement is with PennDOT, allowing the state agency to enter into the arrangement to transfer winter maintenance responsibilities to the borough, which has the equipment, personnel and commitment to perform winter maintenance work for designated state highways, including bridges and approaches.

In other business, officials announced that a dedication ceremony for the new Route 443 bridge is scheduled for Sept. 10 at 2 p.m. It is the culmination of a reconstruction project that offers improved design, safety and traffic flow along Columbia Street.

Upcoming events in the borough include the Schuylkill County fall cleanup Sept. 12-14, a Corvette show on Sept. 15 and Borough Day on Sept. 28.

Wireless high-speed internet service provider WeLink is nearing completion of its work establishing service in the borough and plans to start marketing efforts soon.  After borough officials approved starting the process, months of preparation began. Crews installed antennas that will broadcast to 4 square miles around the borough with three different levels of speeds.

Borough electric crews are completing hooking up electric service to the broadcast units. It is expected that WeLink will start marketing the new service this fall.
