Schuylkill Haven officials weigh waste disposal bids

Schuylkill Haven’s sanitation and recycling contract is up soon, and Borough Council approved two submitted bids at its Sept. 21 meeting.

There were two bids, one from County Waste/GFL and one from Anthracite Waste, and the contracts could be bid as one, three, or five years.

A winning bid was not awarded, and secretary Kaitlyn Tinari said borough officials hope to make a decision by the next council meeting

There is no word on if rates will change for borough residents under a new contract.

In other business, two invoices for the ongoing wastewater treatment plant project were approved, payment for mechanical/HVAC work to Master Mechanical Corporation at a cost of $3,385 and for general/process mechanical to LB Industries  at a cost of $271,873.

Council rejected a request from Orwigsburg requesting fire police for that borough’s Halloween parade because it conflicted with a Schuylkill Haven Halloween event the same day and there being a lack of manpower to cover both.

No updates were provided regarding an ongoing complaint from residents in the area of Becker Street. During an August meeting, several residents expressed their distress with traffic flow and parking along Becker Street.

At that August meeting, resident Frank Noecker said that he was tired of being told by police that residents in the area cannot park near or even on their own driveways or be ticketed.

After the Sept. 7 meeting, borough administrator Jessica Seiders reported that borough solicitor Mark Semanchik said Main Street residents can continue to park their vehicles on their property including the driveway/aprons adjacent to Becker Street.

No public comments were made during the brief meeting.
