Schuylkill Haven School Board reorganizes

The Schuylkill Haven Area School Board held its reorganization meeting on Dec. 8, swearing in Julie Wisner as a new member and Sandy Hess, Bud Runkle and Diana McGoey for another term. Scott Jacoby was reelected president. Diana McGoey vice president and Krystal McGarry assistant secretary.

Establishing a junior high school football program was the hot topic at the meeting. The board voted to approve a junior varsity football team as long as a minimum of nine other county school districts had such a program.

Building and improvement

Ken Albitz, buildings and grounds director, gave an update on district projects. All the concrete in the new Performance Sports Center has been finished. The first stair tower has been completed, and the second stair tower is underway. Sprinkler systems, electrical work and AC duct work continues.

Superintendent Dr. Shawn Fitzpatrick added that roofing material was expected to arrive shortly, and the building should be under roof within the next week or two.

Work was approved to extend the parking lot, install curbing, improve drainage and upgrade lighting for Zwerling Auditorium, Rotary Field, Sports Performance Center and Buffington Field. The project cost shall not exceed $613,261.

“You’re going to see a great deal of progress within the next few weeks,” Fitzgerald said.

Employment

The board voted to accept the appointment of Devan Smith as Elementary Center drama adviser. Also appointed to new positions are Stacey McClusky, high school assistant track and field coach and Katrina Holley as custodian/aide in the middle school.

The board voted to approve Sara Miller, paraprofessional, from temporary to regular status retroactive to Oct. 8. The committee recommends the appointment of Devan Miller to the position of part-time highly qualified paraprofessional effective Dec. 9

The board approved Marissa LaScala as an Elementary ACHIEVE staff member retroactive to Nov. 1.

Other business

Two new courses were approved for the high school beginning in the 2022-23 school year: STEM 10 for 10th grade students and Lifetime and Recreational Wellness for grades 10-12.

Laura Schaeffer, school nurse, presented the board with the status of COVID-19 within the district. The board recommended continuing the current masking policy until Jan. 17. The board will revisit the policy in January. Pennsylvania schools have been given the choice on mask policies after the state Supreme Court overturned the Wolf administration’s mandates.

Meetings in 2022 will be held on the second Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m.
