Schuylkill IU launches vocational program

Schuylkill Intermediate Unit 29 is launching Project SEARCH in partnership with Lehigh Valley Health Network, Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, Goodwill, SAM Inc. and Schuylkill County MH/DS.

IU officials said Project SEARCH, which will operate in the upcoming school year, provides education and training through an innovative workforce career development model that benefits the individual, workplace, and community.

It is described as a unique, business-led, one-year, school-to-work program that takes place entirely at the workplace. Total workplace immersion combines classroom instruction, career exploration and relevant job-skills training through strategically designed internships. The goal is competitive employment for each participant.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to help students transition from school to the workplace and there are still additional seats available in the program,” said Dr. Renee Evans, director of special education at IU 29.

For additional information contact Evans at 570-544-9131 ext 1211 or email evanr@iu29.org.

The program is hosted by Lehigh Valley Health Network at East Norwegian Street in Pottsville, where students have access to a number of tasks within the hospital.
