Schuylkill residents attend Pennsylvania March for Life

Members of Schuylkill County churches attended the second annual Pennsylvania March for Life in Harrisburg on Sept. 19. More than 5,000 pro-life supporters attended the march.

Parishioners from St. Ambrose Church in Schuylkill Haven organized the trip, which included people from St. Patrick’s and St. John the Baptist churches, Pottsville; St. John the 23rd, Tamaqua; Christ Church, McKeansburg; and Nativity High School.

Bishop Alfred Schlert of the Allentown Diocese kicked off the day with morning Mass and an inspiring message at St. Mary’s Church in Hamburg. Students from Nativity, Marian Catholic, and Allentown Central Catholic were among those in attendance.

“God delivered a beautiful day to pray for the unborn and to show our love and support for all women facing an unplanned pregnancy,” St. Ambrose parishioner Carol Bylone said.

Pennsylvania is the first state to hold a March for Life since the Supreme Court landmark overturning of Roe vs Wade in June. Speakers included state Senate Majority Leader Kim Ward, pro-life physician Dr. Monique Ruberu and activist Kathy Barnette, who is herself the result of her mother having been raped at the age of 12.

The headline address came from Ann McElhinney, a best-selling author and director of the movie ‘Gosnell,’ The Trial of America’s Biggest Serial Killer.’

State Reps. Joe Kerwin and Tim Twardzik met with members of the local contingent. Both expressed their support for pro-life legislation and spoke passionately about the issue.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano also attended the march and called on Democratic politicians to cease their rhetoric condemning pro-life crisis centers. He also criticized Democratic Senate candidate John Fetterman for not supporting any limits on abortion.

Four women who are members of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign spoke to the crowd to share their regrets in having had an abortion.

While anti-abortion supporters were gathered outside the Capitol, a group of House Democratic lawmakers held a news conference inside to announce a package of four bills that would protect the licenses of abortion care providers, protect those seeking an abortion from prosecution and expand the number of health care providers who may provide an abortion.
