After falling to Muhlenberg a week ago, the Schuylkill Valley Panthers responded with a 31-27 win over Daniel Boone at Leesport in Week 2 of the Lancaster-Lebanon high school football season.
The high-flying offense of Schuylkill Valley prevailed, as quarterback Logan Nawrocki completed 15-for-22 passes for three touchdowns to help the Panthers (1-1) earn the win after overcoming an early seven-point deficit.
On the defensive side, junior Cooper Hohenadel rank back an interception 27 yards early in the second quarter to for Schuylkill Valley. And despite being outscored 13-0 in the fourth quarter, the Panthers held on for the victory after Schuylkill Valley recovered an onside kick with 3:52 left in the game and ran out the clock from there.
The Panthers led 24-14 at the half.
Daniel Boone junior Haydn Moyer got the Blazers (0-2) off to a strong start in the first quarter after a fumbled snap on third and six from the Schuylkill Valley 44 went over his head and back into Daniel Boone terrirtory.
Quick on his feet, Moyer recovered the fumble and launched a 44-yard bomb to Blake Elliott for the game’s opening score with 9:09 remaining in the first.
From there, the Panthers maintained their composure and took over the momentum after the first quarter.
Trailing 7-3 at the start of the second quarter, Hohenadel intercepted Moyer on third and eight from the Schuylkill Valley 21. Hohenadel was one of several defenders trying to corral a tipped loose ball, and when he got the ball in his grasp, saw nothing but daylight on his way to the end zone for a 27-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Moyer and Daniel Boone would not be deterred despite the turnover, as he led the Blazers on a 9-play, 64-yard drive that culminated in a 2-yard rushing score by Moyer. The score gave Daniel Boone the lead briefly at 14-10 with 6:41 left.
After a strong kick return, Nawrocki threw a 36-yard strike to fellow senior Lucas Spotts to give Schuylkill Valley the lead once more at 17-14 with 6:24 remaining in the first half.
The Blazers fumbled the ensuing kickoff, giving the ball back to the Panthers just ten seconds later. Daniel Boone fumbled three times in the first half and lost two of them.
Schuylkill Valley closed out the second half in style, and Nawrocki threw his second touchdown pass of the game with 3:49 left in the opening half. This time, a shuffle pass to sophomore John Kowalski that Kowalski took 14 yards for the score capped off an 8-play, 40-yard drive.
Nawrocki had 104 yards and two touchdowns in the first half and was 9-for-12 passing. Moyer had 105 passing yards in the first half, one interception, and was 6-for-10 in the first half.
Nawrocki came out with the hotter hand at the start of the second half. He threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Dillon Lackner while under pressure to complete an 8-play, 62-yard drive. Nawrocki avoided the pass rush on several plays during the drive, including a first and 15 that he was forced at least 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage before connecting with Kowen Gerner for an 18-yard pass for a first down.
A turnover cost the Blazers on their next possession, as Daniel Boone went for a fake punt pass on fourth and 14 at their own 47 and the pass by Dominic Stoudt was intercepted by Brandon Pyle on Schuylkill Valley.
After Reese Wamsher missed a 34-yard field goal midway through the third, Moyer showed off his skills, leading Daniel Boone on a 10-play touchdown-scoring drive that started at their own 20.
Moyer completed the drive with a 1-yard rushing touchdown, and had three consecutive deep passes of 41, 11 and 24 yards to set up the 1-yard rushing score that made it 31-21 with just over 11 minutes to go in the game.
After forcing a Schuylkill Valley 3-and-out, the Blazers took over with 10:12 left in the game at their own 2. Daniel Boone picked up three first downs before penalties forced the Blazers into a fourth and 18 situation at their own 44.
Moyer had a solid run on the play but could not pick up the first down, giving the ball back to the Panthers with six minutes to go.
Moments later on its next chance with the football, Moyer found Max Heffner wide open deep over the middle for a 57-yard touchdown pass for Daniel Boone. The ensuing extra point attempt was blocked and the Blazers trailed 31-27 with 3:43 to go.
Schuylkill Valley ran out the clock.
