Schuylkill Valley girls basketball team earns convincing win over Fleetwood

Schuylkill Valley defeated Fleetwood 50-42 in a Berks Girls Basketball League game Monday at Fleetwood.

Madison Ziska led the Panthers (11-0, 19-1) with 16 points.

Fleetwood junior Alexis Hess scored a game-high 25 points, including the 1,000th of her career for the Tigers (6-5, 11-9). She has 1,014 points.

Both teams played tight defense in the first quarter and the Panthers held a 12-11 lead after one. Hess had seven of Fleetwood’s 11 first-quarter points.

Schuylkill Valley started to overpower Fleetwood early in the second. The Panthers went on an 11-0 run before Amaris Torres scored the Tigers’ first points of the quarter with about four minutes to go. Schuylkill Valley converted three 3-pointers in the second quarter.

Hess scored a 3-pointer and a layup in the closing seconds of the half to reach 1,000 points.

The Panthers led 27-18 at the half.

Schuylkill Valley capitalized on Fleetwood turnovers and outrebounded the Tigers in the third. Juliana Stichter had four points in the quarter to help extend the Panthers’ lead to 38-27.

Jayden Heck-Hoppes scored eight of the Panthers’ 12 fourth-quarter points to help Schuylkill Valley put it away. Heck-Hoppes finished with 13 points. Natane White had 10 points for the Panthers.

Schuylkill Valley, which already has clinched the Berks III title, has won 10 straight games and will finish its regular season at Brandywine Heights on Tuesday.

Fleetwood, which went into the night tied for second in Berks III, will wrap up its regular season Wednesday at Manheim Central.
