Sections of 2 Reading streets closed due to partial building collapse [Map]

Sections of Perkiomen Avenue and Spruce Street have been closed to traffic in response to safety concerns regarding an abandoned church building, city officials announced Friday.

The following road closures are in effect:

• Perkiomen Avenue is closed to traffic from Mineral Spring Road to South 14th Street.

• Spruce Street is closed to traffic from Mineral Spring Road to Miller Street.

The roads were closed Friday afternoon following the partial collapse of the former St. Cecilia Roman Catholic Church, 1340 Perkiomen Ave.

Demolition on a portion of the church tower is expected to begin Saturday morning, according to city Fire Marshal Jeremy Searfoss.

“The safety of our residents is our top priority,” Mayor Eddie Moran said in a news release. “We are taking proactive measures to address the potential danger posed by the abandoned church. I urge all residents to obey all road closure postings and cooperate with the authorities during this time.”

Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes and follow detour signs.

Updates will be provided as the situation progresses, city officials said.
