Snow causing trouble on local roads as storm begins

Snowfall from the start of a winter storm Sunday is causing problems on some local roads.

An accident on westbound Interstate 78 shortly after nightfall was tying up that highway, and other crashes were being reported around the county.

Officials are urging people to stay off the roads while conditions are hazardous and to exercise caution if they must drive..

PennDOT is reducing speed limits to 45 mph on the following highways:

Interstate 78 in Berks, Lehigh and Northampton counties, Route 222 in Berks and Lehigh counties, Interstate 176, Route 422 in Berks County, ;Interstate 80 in Carbon and Monroe counties; Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County; Interstate 380 in Monroe County. Route 22 in Lehigh and Northampton counties; Route 209 in Carbon, Schuylkill and Monroe counties; and Route 33 in Monroe and Northampton counties.

Tonight’s storm is expected to start as snow before eventually changing over to rain by Monday morning.
