Snow squall warning issued for Berks; spinouts reported on icy I-78

A snow squall warning has been issued by the National Weather Service office in Mount Holly, N.J., for Berks County on Saturday morning.

The warning is in effect until 10:30 a.m.

It reads, in part: “At 9:40 a.m., a dangerous snow squall was located over Strausstown, or 9 miles south of Schuylkill Haven, moving southeast at 10 mph.

“Poor visibility in heavy snow and blowing snow. Wind gusts up to 30 mph.

“Reduce your speed and turn on headlights.

“Wet roadways will quickly freeze. Black ice will cause roads, bridges and overpasses to become slick and dangerous. Slow down and be prepared for sudden loss of traction.”

Crews were dispatched about 9:30 a.m. Saturday for “multiple vehicles into the median” on Interstate 78 in Bethel Township.

Crews getting on the highway described conditions as “a sheet of ice” and asked for PennDOT help with treating the interstate, according to emergency reports.

One tow was needed and one person required medical attention, according to reports.
