Arts & Crafts

This Is It: Meet the artist, Norma Weingast Hirsch, opening night, Thursday, Sept. 1, Tamaqua Arts Center, 125 Pine St., complementary light refreshments and snacks, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Art will be on display through September.

Fired up Ceramics: For seniors and veterans 62 and up, at the Walk In Art Center every Friday, 1 to 3 p.m. Make pottery or sculptures. All supplies provided. A $6 donation is requested to help defer the cost. Information: 570-732-3728.

Outdoors

Walk Through Sunflowers: Through Aug. 26 at 10 Pebble Lane, Tamaqua (Near Heisler’s Dairy Bar), 1 to 8 p.m. Weather permitting walk the pathways of 16 acres of sunflowers and cut stems to create your very own bouquet for $10 a person, wagon ride, $5 per family. Pets are welcome as long as they are friendly and leashed. Other activities on weekends include Mitchell’s Grill & Catering, Music, and King Cole Winery.

Canoe and Kayak Rental: Saturdays, Sundays through Labor Day. Watercraft available on a first-come, first-served basis. Times are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Last rental at 6 p.m. All boats must be returned by 7 p.m. Information: 570-527-2505; weekends after 11 a.m. 570-345-3537.

Free Band Fest: Saturday, Aug. 20, 4 to 8 p.m., Bethany Christian Fellowship, 102 Front St., Cressona. Featuring recording artist Joel Vaughn, the Unmentionables, Dave Evans, local bands and speaker Jim Shields. There will be a skate board park and food truck Haven Meltdown.

Line dancing: Held every Monday at the Walk In Art Center. This is an ongoing adult class, drop-in only, no partner or registration needed. It is $6 per class and pay at the door. Senior groups

History

Minersville Area Historical Society: Saturday, Aug. 20, 4 p.m., Washington Hotel, 201 Sunbury St., Minersville, meet Mitch Troutman, author of the “Bootleg Coal Rebellion.” He will discuss and sign copies of his book. Stories of alternative types of mining, specifically illegal types and how “bootleggers” worked around the power structure of the larger and wealthy coal companies in the Anthracite region.
