Outdoors

Step into Spring Hike: 10-11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 25, at Waterfall Parking Lot, Sweet Arrow Lake Park, Pine Grove. Welcome spring by hiking park trails. Participants meet in the Waterfall Road Pavilion located just off Waterfall Road.

Seedling Sale: Order deadline, Saturday, March 25. Pick up seedlings ordered, Saturday, May 6, from 9 a.m. to noon at Sweet Arrow Lake Park at the Waterfall Pavilion, 48 Waterfall Road, Pine Grove. The Schuylkill County Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer questions.

Mentored Youth Trout Fishing Days: 8 a.m., statewide, Saturday, March 25. Youth anglers must obtain a Mentored Youth Permit or a Voluntary Youth Fishing License from the commission and be accompanied by a licensed adult angler to participate. Anglers 16 years or older (adult anglers) must possess a valid Pennsylvania fishing license and a current trout/salmon permit, and be accompanied by a youth (less than 16 years of age) who has obtained a Mentored Youth Fishing Permit or a Voluntary Youth Fishing License from the commission. Youth anglers with a license or permit may possess a total of two trout (combined species) with a minimum length of seven inches. Adult anglers are prohibited from possessing trout. Outdoor Nature Sketching: 1-3 p.m., Sunday, March 26, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Education Building, 1700 Hawk Mountain Road, Kempton, $25, for ages 10 and up. Learn the fundamentals of nature sketching with local wildlife artist and raptor enthusiast Dave Hughes. Program begins with a live raptor encounter. Dress for outdoors as there will be a hike outside for artistic inspiration. Bring a sketch book, pencil, eraser, packed lunch, and water bottle. Families welcome. Information: 610-756-6961.

Rumpsch Match & Block Shoot: Noon-5 p.m., rain or shine, March 26, Auburn Game and Fish Association, 29 River Road, Auburn. Turkeys, ½ hams, ½ pork loins, shrimp, meat trays. Refreshments and food available.

Hike: 10:30 a.m., March 28, 5-mile hike to explore the mountain behind Locust Lake State Park and visit Silver Creek Fire Tower. Hike is moderate in difficulty. Participants meet at the visitor parking lot at Locust Lake State Park before the contact station at 10:15 a.m. and will be traveling to another area to start hike. Bring lunch and your dog. Mosquitos and Ticks: 6 p.m., Wednesday, March 29, Sweet Arrow Lake clubhouse, Route 443, Pine Grove. Kyle Schutt, insect management technician for the Schuylkill Conservation District, will present the program with time for discussion and questions. He will provide information on common diseases carried by these insect pests. Methods of control performed by the Conservation District will be covered as well as tips for homeowners to lower mosquito and tick populations around their home.

Year-Round Fishing: This event is in memory of Betty Dietz and Bruce Schneck. Stockings of tagged fish will be on or about April 8, 15, 22 and 29. Tagged fish every stocking total $10,000. There will be 360 Lunkers. Top prizes will be five each of $500, $300, $200 and will be tag specific, an additional 50 at $100 each. Deadline for registration at Werner Lumber or Stony Gun and Archery will be Saturday, April 7 or until 4 p.m. at Fish and Boat Access pavilion, Sunday, April 8. Tags may be submitted till day before event in 2024. Sponsors include Pioneer Pole Buildings, Friends of Schuylkill Parks and Recreation, First Citizens Community Bank. Arts & Crafts

Printmaking Workshop: 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Saturday, March 25, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Education Building, 1700 Hawk Mountain Road, Kempton, $30, limited to 12 participants. Painting Class: 12 p.m., Sunday, March 26, with local artist, Andrea Perno at Summit Station Fire Company, 88 Firehouse Road. Refreshments will be provided. Pysanky Class: Folk artist Georgine Postupak-Borchick will teach pysanky egg-making classes at the Schuylkill County Historical Society, 305 N. Centre St., Pottsville, from 6 to 8 p.m. on March 23 and 30. Fees for each of the two classes are $30 for society members and $35 for the general public. Schuylkill Haven: Senior citizens meet twice a month. Meetings are held at 6 p.m. the second and fourth Monday of the month at the Schuylkill Haven Senior Center, 340 Haven St., Schuylkill Haven.
