Class notes

Pine Grove Area High School Alumni Association Banquet: All Pine Grove graduates and their guests are welcome and encouraged to attend on Saturday May 27, at middle school cafeteria. Advance tickets are required. Tickets are $23 per person and can be purchased at Werner Lumber Company, East Pottsville Street, Pine Grove, or by calling Rosemary Kramer at 570-345-3293. Reservation deadline is May 20. No reservations will be accepted after that date. Tickets will not be sold at the door. Social Hour will begin at 4:30 p.m. and dinner, catered by Hess Catering, Inc., Schuylkill Haven, will be served at 5:30 p.m. This banquet is the major fundraising event for our academic scholarship program, which last year provided $5,800 in funds to 10 Pine Grove graduating seniors.

Spring Bird Walk: 8 a.m., Saturday, May 6, Locust Lake State Park parking lot, 687 Tuscarora Park Road, Barnesville. David Kruel will lead the bird walk sponsored by the Schuylkill Conservancy. On Saturday, May 13, Thomas Buehl Jr. will lead a walk at 8 a.m. and on Saturday, May 20, Tonia Jordan will lead a walk at 8 a.m. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars. Spring Bird Walk: 9-11 a.m., Sunday, May 7, Sweet Arrow Lake, Waterfall parking lot, 48 Waterfall Road, Pine Grove. Barb Ritzheimer leads the walk. Participants will locate and identify resident and migratory species that inhabit the park from sight, song and cellphone. Program is free and open to beginning and experienced birdwatchers. Rock the Block: Gates open at 5:30 p.m., concert 6 p.m., Saturday, May 20, Walk In Art Center parking lot, 220 Parkway, Schuylkill Haven. The Uptown Music Collective will present a tribute to the music of Queen. Tickets are $30 and include beer tickets. Other drinks and food will be available. In case of rain the concert will move to the Main Gallery at the Walk In.

Line Dancing: Every Monday at the Walk In Art Center, 220 Parkway, Schuylkill Haven. This is an ongoing adult class, drop-in only, no partner or registration needed. It is $6 per class and pay at the door. Basic steps, 6:15-6:30 p.m.; lesson, 6:30-7:30 p.m.; dancing, 7:30-8 p.m. If attending for the first time as a drop in, it is advised to call ahead. Senior groups

Schuylkill Haven: Senior citizens meet twice a month. Meetings are held at 6 p.m. the second and fourth Monday of the month at the Schuylkill Haven Senior Center, 340 Haven St. The next meeting is Monday, May 8. There will be a time for refreshments, games and fellowship. Information call 570-640-6928.

Schuylkill Haven Senior Travelers: May 23-25 a trip to Pittsburgh is planned. They will stop at Flight 93 Memorial and then on to Pittsburgh for a cruise on the Gateway Clipper with entertainment and touring, then dinner at P&LE Train Station. Next day U of Pitt Cathedral of Learning and more, Heinz Memorial Chapel, Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Falling Water” Creation. Orwigsburg: Senior citizens meet the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at Veterans Memorial Hall, 300 Grove St., 11 a.m. Seniors will enjoy bingo at the next meeting, Tuesday, May 9.

Horseback Riding

Therapeutic Riding: Lessons begin Monday, May 1 for eight weeks on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Therapeutic horseback riding improves balance, posture, strength and coordination. It helps to increase self-awareness, self-confidence, attention span and independence in children and adults with disabilities.
