Two Lancaster Country Day School students who reside in Berks County were among the winners of the 2025 North Museum Science & Engineering Fair.
Jermaine Edwards of Muhlenberg Township was named Junior Reserve Champion for his project titled “On the Surface.” The project explored which household items are the most effective for extracting oils from water in a small environmental cleanup scenario.
Jermaine also received auxiliary awards, including the Einstein’s Grandmother Award for Excellence in Science Communication and Third Place for Creative Solutions to Lancaster County Problems. In addition, his project earned First Place in the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science annual science fair, and he will next participate in the PJAS state competition at Penn State University in May.
He is an eighth-grade high honors student at LCDS, and he is the son of Jermaine and Kristin Edwards.
Jared Hopgood of Shillington received First Place in the Junior Division-Engineering category for his project titled “How Does the Number of Input & Output Holes Affect the Flow Rate Through a Microfluidic Device.” The project explored how liquid flow rates differ when more or less input and output holes are added to the microfluidic device. The hand-built devices were constructed by attaching three separate sheets of polystyrene plastic together. Polystyrene plastic shrinks when in the presence of heat. One layer was the input, the next layer was the design layer, and the final layer was the output. The devices were then baked in the oven and, once cooled, they were measured and finally tested to see how liquid flowed throughout each device.
He is also an eighth-grade high honors student at LCDS, and he is the son of Jared and Erica Hopgood.
