POTTSTOWN — As Pottstown Police Cpl. Anthony Fischer works toward recovery from the gunshot wound he received in the line of duty last week, fellow police officers and members of the community are stepping up to help him and his family.
According to posts on the PA Police and Fire Facebook Page, a goal to raise $2,500 toward expenses has been overwhelmed with nearly $8,000 pledged as of Monday, Nov. 25.
Additionally, more than 18 gift cards for the family have been purchased.
According to the post, “Fischer underwent several surgeries and, while the road to recovery is still long, he is strong and resilient. His journey back to health is a testament to his courage and the support of his family, friends, and community.”

Several donations have been made by police benevolent associations through the app, including Lower Pottsgrove, Hatfield, Lower Gwynedd and Franconia.
“The Pottstown Police Department has had Corporal Fischer in our thoughts and prayers every day,” Pottstown Police Chief Michael Markovich said. “The outpouring of support from the Pottstown community has been amazing. We are grateful to have their support.”
He added, “Corporal Fischer continues to improve daily and we are all hoping for a speedy recovery. Any get well cards can be sent care of Pottstown Police Department, (100 E. High St., Pottstown, PA 19464,) and we will make sure they get to him,” said Markovich.
According to police, William Ciccoli Jr., 42, attempted to take Fischer’s gun during a confrontation with police on Nov. 15. Police were responding to a report of a domestic disturbance and the weapon discharged as the two struggled when Ciccoli was being taken into custody. Ciccoli was subdued with a Taser shot by Officer John Schmalbach.
The shooting incident followed an earlier domestic violence call the same day, at the same location, the 200 block of Chestnut Street, involving the same couple, police said.
Ciccoli has been charged with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault and related charges in the assault on Fischer. He is also charged with strangulation, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person for the assault of his girlfriend who police say he pushed against a wall and choked.
Last week, Montgomery County Court Judge Risa Vetri Ferman kept intact a lower court judge’s decision to deny bail for Ciccoli Jr.
