Teen suspected of armed robbery at bank is dead after standoff with police in western Berks

A 16-year-old boy fatally shot himself during a standoff with state police Wednesday afternoon in a western Berks County home, a day after troopers said he is believed to have fired a rifle during his holdup of a Womelsdorf bank.

Troopers arrived at the home in the first block of Tulpehocken Forge Road in Heidelberg Township about 2 p.m. Wednesday with a search warrant related to Tuesday’s robbery of Fulton Bank, 2400 Conrad Weiser Parkway. The home is about a quarter-mile north of Route 422 and less than 3 miles from the bank that was robbed.

Investigators provided this account:

Upon arrival troopers heard a gunshot from within the residence. The state police tactical team known as SERT (Special Emergency Response Team) was activated.

SERT team members got into the house about 5:15 p.m. and found the body of the teen. He was pronounced dead at 6:12 p.m. by a Berks County deputy coroner.

The teen died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and the manner of death was ruled a suicide by the coroner’s office.

Troopers withheld the teen’s name because he is juvenile. They said he was linked to the armed robbery of Fulton Bank

Investigators said he entered the bank about 3:50 p.m. holding a hunting rifle in his right hand and a camouflage backpack in his left land. He demanded money from a teller and fired a round in the teller’s direction before fleeing in a silver Chevrolet Impala.

No one was injured in the robbery.
