This summer, Berks County readers are invited to help a shelter pet find a forever home — just by reading. The third annual Pages for Pets program challenges the community to read a collective 500,000 minutes, unlocking a fully sponsored adoption for one lucky animal at the Animal Rescue League of Berks County.
Hosted by Reading District Libraries in collaboration with the Animal Rescue League, this beloved initiative runs alongside the library’s annual summer learning program.
From Monday, June 23, through Friday, July 25, readers of all ages can log their reading minutes, and are free to read whatever they choose, including novels, eBooks, audiobooks, comics and graphic novels, newspapers, and more. Every minute contributes to reaching the 500,000-minute goal that will fund the adoption fee of a shelter pet.
On Monday, July 28, the Animal Rescue League will announce which pet’s adoption was made possible by the community’s efforts.
“Pages for Pets combines two things our community loves: reading and helping animals,” said Marissa Guidara, youth services district consultant for Reading District Libraries. “It’s heartwarming to see people of all ages come together to make a real difference, one page at a time.”
Last summer, Berks County readers successfully met the goal, and the Animal Rescue League announced Egypt, a one-year-old pit bull, as the sponsored pet. She was adopted into her forever home shortly after.
Alongside Pages for Pets, all 25 library locations in Berks County will offer their own free summer learning programs, featuring a full schedule of activities for children, teens, and adults.
