Three Berks golfers won championships at the District 3 individual tournaments in York Saturday, making for a historic day for the county.
Wilson’s Kayla Maletto won her second straight Class 3A girls title, while Daniel Boone’s Chase Yenser won the Class 3A boys championship and Hamburg’s Erica Gerner won the Class 2A girls title.
Maletto, a senior and a three-time Berks champ, shot a 2-over 74 Saturday for a two-day total of 3-over 147 and a four-stroke victory over Warwick’s Elle Overly at Honey Run Golf Club.
Yenser, a sophomore and the Berks champ, shot a 1-under 71 at Honey Run for a total of 3-under 141 and a two-stroke victory over defending champ Lane Krosse of Dallastown.
Gerner, a junior, shot an 11-over 83 Saturday at Briarwood East Golf Club for a total of 16-over 160 and a three-stroke win over Delone Catholic’s Kate Keller.
In Class 3A girls, Maletto went to the par-5 15th Saturday tied for the lead with Overly. Maletto made an eagle, while Overly made a bogey to put Maletto up three strokes.
Both players made pars on No. 16 and bogeys on No. 17. Overly also made a bogey on No. 18 to close out a 79.
Exeter’s Giulia Weisser also qualified for states in Class 3A girls by finishing in the top nine. She shot an 85 Saturday to place seventh with a total of 20-over 164.
Also from Berks, Kyla Quimby (84-94—178) finished 14th.
Yenser is the first Berks boys golfer to win in Class 3A since the sport was split into two classes in 2012. He is the first Berks boys to win a district title since Berks Catholic’s Michael Fioravante won in Class 2A in 2020, and the fourth overall to win since there have been two classes. Wyomissing’s Nate Menon won in 2015, and Tulpehocken’s Chase Miller in 2016 and ’17.
Prior to that, Don Mikes of Wilson was the last Berks golfer to win a boys district title in 1982.
Yenser began Saturday tied for second, one stroke behind Krosse.
Yenser made a bogey on No. 1, but made birdies on No. 4 and No. 9 to make the turn at 1-under and still one stroke behind Krosse.
Krosse made bogeys on three of his next four holes (10, 11 and 13), while Yenser made a birdie on No. 11. He held a three-stroke lead with five holes to play.
Krosse got a stroke back with a birdie on No. 15, and another when Yenser made a bogey on No. 16. But he made his fourth bogey on the back nine on No. 17, and Yenser parred the final two holes. Krosse finished with a 74.
Also qualifying for states in Class 3A boys by finishing in the top 18 was Gov. Mifflin’s Nate Radwanski. He shot a 5-over 77 Saturday to tie for 15th at 7-over 151.
Also from Berks, Fleetwood’s Cameron Peffel (71-82—153) tied for 19th, Fleetwood’s Ryan Hromiak (77-80—157) tied for 28th, and Wilson’s Gavin Siravo (75-86—151) tied for 32nd.
In Class 2A girls, Gerner entered the day with a five-stroke lead.
She is the first Berks girls Class 2A champion since Hamburg’s Aly Rentschler in 2018.
Keller shot an 81 Saturday.
Also from Berks, Oley Valley’s Jessica Howard (85-90—175) finished sixth and Elin Bogia (94-97—1910 eighth.
In Class 2A boys at Briarwood East, Hamburg’s Austin Zweizig and Berks Catholic’s Braeden Stringer qualified for states by finishing in the top eight..
Zweizig shot a 7-over 79 Saturday to tie for fifth at 13-over 157. Stringer also shot a 79 to finish in seventh at 16-over 160.
Also from Berks, Tulpehocken’s Ethan Beidler (78-85—163) finished ninth; Tulpehocken’s Zach Neuin (82-82—164) and Wyomissing’s Chase Maggs (80-84—164) finished in a tie for 10th; Brandywine Heights’ Patrick Taylor (81-85—166) was 12th; and Tulpehocken’s Lewis Dieffenbach (82-93—175) finished 18th
Annville-Cleona’s Reagan Flynn shot an even-par 72 for the second straight day for a total of 144 and a three-stroke victory.
The PIAA tournaments will be held Oct. 16-17 at Penn State. The Class 3A boys and girls will be at Penn State’s Blue Course. The Class 2A boys and girls will be at Penn State’s White Course.
