Wilson’s Kayla Maletto has four-stroke lead after first round of District 3 Class 3A girls golf

Wilson’s Kayla Maletto shot a 1-over 73 to lead by four strokes after the first round of the District 3 Class 3A girls golf championships Friday at Briarwood East Golf Club in York.

Maletto, a junior and the Berks champ, shot an even-par 37 on the front nine, with birdies on 4 and 5 and a double bogey on the par-3 eighth. She shot a 1-over 36 on the back, making a bogey on No. 12.

Tied for second at 77 are Manheim Township’s Piper Smith, Warwick’s Elle Overly and Dallastown’s Taylor Hicks.

Maletto, who finished third in districts as a freshman, did not compete last year due to an injury. She is looking to become the first District 3 Class 3A girls champ from Berks since Conrad Weiser’s Elizabeth McGarrigle in 2012.

Also making the cut to Saturday’s second round were Wilson’s Kyla Quimby at 92 and tied for 13th and Twin Valley’s Maddie Morgan at 100 and tied for 19th.

In Class 3A boys at Briarwood, Berks champ Ryan Hromiak shot a 2-over 74 and was tied for sixth. He trails the leader, Lane Krosse of Dallastown, by four shots.

Also making the cut were Daniel Boone’s Chase Yenser, tied for 15th at 76; Wilson’s Wilson’s Kyle Rittersbach, tied for 28th at 78; and Twin Valley’s Shayne O’Doherty and Wilson’s Nate Neiswender, tied for 30th at 79.

In Class 2A boys at Honey Run Golf Club in York, Berks Catholic’s David Birmingham shot a 7-over 79. He is in sixth place, three strokes back.

Pequea Valley’s Matt Lapp and Lancaster Country Day’s Winston Thai shot 76 to tie for the lead.

Also making the cut were Wyomissing’s Chase Maggs, Tulpehocken’s Zach Neuin and Berks Catholic’s Braeden Stringer, tied for ninth at 81; Hamburg’s Austin Zweizig, 14th at 84; and Tulpehocken’s Ethan Beidler, 15th at 85.

In Class 2A girls at Honey Run, Kutztown’s Emilee Barkley shot a 17-over 89 and was in fourth place, 10 strokes behind the leader, Brooke Graham of Boiling Springs.

Also making the cut were Oley Valley’s Heidi Wegscheider, fifth at 90; and Hamburg’s Erica Gerner sixth at 91.

The second round begins at 10 a.m. in all classes.

In the team tournaments, which were run concurrently with the first round, Berks Catholic finished tied for second in Class 2A at 58-over 546. Delone Catholic won the title at 54-over 342.

In Class 3A, Berks champ Wilson finished fourth at 23-over 311. Dallastown won at 13-over 301.
