Wilson junior Kayla Maletto shot a 2-under 70 Saturday to win the District 3 Class 3A girls golf championship by four strokes with a two-round total of 1-under 143 at Briarwood East Golf Club in York.
Six other Berks golfers also qualified for the PIAA Championships in Class 3A and 2A boys and Class 2A girls.
Maletto, the Berks champ, shot a 1-under 36 on the front nine Saturday. She made birdies on 1 and 8 and a bogey on No. 3. She made a birdie on the par-5 17th and shot 1-under 34 on the back.
Piper Smith of Manheim Township finished second at 147 after shooting a 70 Saturday.
Maletto is the first District 3 Class 3A girls champ from Berks since Conrad Weiser’s Elizabeth McGarrigle in 2012, and the first in either class since Hamburg’s Aly Rentschler won the Class 2A title in 2018.
Maletto finished third in districts as a freshman, but did not compete last year due to an injury. Her season will continue at states at Penn State’s White Course on Oct. 17-18.
Two Berks golfers each in Class 3A boys, Class 2A boys and Class 2A girls made states.
In Class 3A boys at Briarwood, Berks champ Ryan Hromiak of Fleetwood shot a 3-over 75 Saturday to finish tied for sixth at 5-over 149. Daniel Boone’s Chase Yenser also advanced to states after shooting a 75 to finish tied for 10th at 151.
Dallastown’s Lane Krosse won the title at 70-75—145.
In Class 2A boys at Honey Run Golf Club in York, Berks Catholic’s Braeden Stringer and David Birmingham each made states after finishing in a tie for fourth. Stringer shot a 7-over 79 and Birmingham an 81 to finish at 16-over 160
Lancaster Country Day’s Winston Thai won the title at 76-75—151.
In Class 2A girls at Honey Run Golf Club, Oley Valley’s Heidi Wegscheider and Hamburg’s Erica Gerner advanced to states. Wegscheider finished third at 188 following a 16-over 88, and Gerner came in fourth at 182 following a 91.
Boiling Springs’ Brooke Graham won the title at 79-81—160.
The Class 3A state championships in boys also will be at Penn State’s White Course on Oct. 17-18. The Class 2A championships in boys and girls will be at Penn State’s Blue Course on Oct. 17-18.
In other Berks results Saturday in Class 3A boys, Wilson’s Kyle Rittersbach finished tied for 25th at 13-over 157 after shooting a 79, and Twin Valley’s Shane O’Doherty and Wilson’s Nate Neiswender finished in a tie 32nd at 159 after each shot 80.
In Class 2A boys, Tulpehocken’s Zach Neuin shot an 83 to finish tied for ninth at 164; Hamburg’s Austin Zweizig shot an 83 to finish 14th at 167; Wyomissing’s Chase Maggs shot an 87 to finish tied for 16th at 168; and Tulpehocken’s Ethan Beidler shot an 89 to finish 17th at 174,
In Class 3A girls, Wilson’s Kyla Quimby shot an 88 to finish tied for 13th at 180, and Twin Valley’s Maddie Morgan shot a 95 to finish in 18th at 195
In Class 2A girls, Kutztown’s Emilee Barkley shot a 94 to finish fifth at 183.
