Three men from Berks County recently were inducted into the District 3 Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Wilson grad Jeff Gibble, Gov. Mifflin grad Corey Houser and the late former Oley Valley coach Larry Wildermuth are part of the 12-member Class of 2022.
Gibble, a 1994 Wilson grad, was a three-time sectional champion and three-time District 3 Class 3A champ. He was named District 3 Class 3A Wrestler of the Year as a senior. He also was a two-time PIAA place-winner, finishing sixth in 1992 and fourth in 1993. He won the Bud Lindholm Award as Berks’ wrestler of the year three times. He finished with a career record of 121-12-1, with 85 pins.
Houser, a 2007 Mifflin grad, won the PIAA Class 3A title at 125 pounds as a senior. He also was a four-time sectional finalist, winning three titles, and a two-time District 3 Class 3A place-winner. He had a career record of 98-15.
Wildermuth, a 1965 Gov. Mifflin grad and a 1969 Albright College grad, coached Oley Valley from 1969-97. He compiled a 272-138-2 record, winning eight division titles and the 1991 Berks championship. He also coached 25 state qualifiers, including four place-winners, and six District 3 champions. He went on to coach Tulpehocken’s junior high team and in the school’s elementary program, where he worked with his grandchildren.
Wildermuth, a teacher for 42 years, was inducted into the Berks County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
He died on March 24, 2020, following a long battle with cancer. He was 72.
