OppShop is celebrating Thrift Shop Day on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

OppShop is a retail thrift store owned and operated by Opportunity House. Located at 3045 5th St. Highway in Muhlenberg Township, the store is open five days a week.

The Thrift Shop Day event focuses on the benefits of thrifting and its impact on the community, which include:

• diverting waste from landfills
• maintaining sustainable fashion
• providing affordable furniture, appliances, housewares, clothing, books, and media
• encouraging creativity for those who choose to repurpose furniture and clothing
• generating funds for Opportunity House

At OppShop, retail thrift is part of our mission to help struggling families have access to affordable items to furnish their homes, clothe their families, and entertain children and adults.

The reasons people shop at OppShop are as diverse as the shoppers themselves. For some, it’s about saving money and stretching their budget. Today, many thrifters shop to express their concern for the environment. They make a conscious effort to reduce their carbon footprint. Reusing and repurposing items helps them achieve their goals. Avid collectors enjoy finding pieces to add to their collections. Whether they collect vintage glassware or unique books, retail thrift stores are a great place to locate those hard-to-find treasures. Do-It-Yourselfers enjoy the challenge of turning an outdated piece into a new, stylish accessory for your home.

Nostalgia also plays a big role in thrifting. For many, seeing an item from their childhood or an item that reminds them of a loved one makes thrift shopping rewarding. Finding that treasure from years gone by gives comfort to shoppers. When you shop at thrift stores, you’ll find vintage items, antiques, and collectibles from every decade.

OppShop is unique in its expansive array of products, including furniture, housewares, books, media, appliances, and seasonal decor. In addition to gently used items, OppShop often sells new items. Vendors offer these items as an alternative to discarding them when orders are canceled, or items are returned.

At OppShop, all proceeds from our retail thrift operation benefit Opportunity House. In the fiscal year 2024, our efforts diverted 1,041,000 pounds from landfills.

This event is part of the year-long 40th anniversary celebration for Opportunity House. Since 1984, Opportunity House has provided emergency shelter for over 500 clients each year who experience homelessness.
