The Toronto Blue Jays selected Boyertown native Trey Yesavage with the 20th overall pick in the Major League Baseball Draft on Sunday night, making him the highest-area draft pick in recent history.
Yesavage, a 2021 Boyertown High School graduate, began his collegiate career at East Carolina University as a relief pitcher. He appeared in 34 games as a freshman, posting a 4.50 earned run average with 46 strikeouts in 26 innings pitched.
During his sophomore season in 2023, Yesavage appeared in 16 games overall, with 14 of his outings coming as a starter. He was a revelation on the mound for the Pirates, going 7-1 with a 2.61 ERA and 105 strikeouts in 76 innings.
His draft stock continued to soar as a junior as Yesavage was even better this past season. In 15 appearances (all starts) for ECU, Yesavage posted an 11-1 record with a miniscule 2.03 ERA, striking out a whopping 145 batters in his 93 ⅓ innings of work. He was a 2024 First Team All-America selection while holding opposing hitters to a .154 batting average.
Yesavage played four years under longtime Boyertown head coach Todd Moyer. He pitched in 11 games as a sophomore, helping the Bears to a 16-win season while throwing a no-hitter in the process. Yesavage had no junior season due to the pandemic, but finished strong as a senior with a 0.97 ERA in 10 games on the mound, striking out 83 batters in 50 ⅔ innings pitched. Boyertown advanced to the District 1-6A championship game that season.
