Train hits, kills man in Lehigh County

An Alburtis man died Sunday after being hit by a train in the borough.

Lehigh County Coroner Daniel A. Buglio said the 26-year-old man was pronounced dead about 10:30 a.m.

Buglio said an investigation was continuing and that he did not expect to release the man’s name or cause of death until Monday.

Alburtis police Chief Tony Alsleben said the man was hit about 9:50 a.m. by a westbound Norfolk Southern train, shortly after an eastbound train passed the train tracks at North Main Street, between Front Street and West Penn Avenue.

Alsleben said the man was southbound at the Main Street crossing. A witness told police he saw the railroad crossing arm down, with lights flashing, but the man went around the arm after he saw the eastbound train clear. The witness told police the man did not see the westbound train coming, Alsleben said.

“I don’t know why he crossed [the tracks],” Alsleben said. “We may never know why he crossed. But you cannot cross those crossings until the lights are off.”

Alsleben said the train stopped a short distance from the accident, and a Norfolk Southern spokesperson said none of the crew members on board was hurt.

Besides police and the coroner’s office, Norfolk Southern police are investigating, Alsleben said.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
