Tulpehocken falls to Camp Hill in District 3 Class 1A boys soccer championship match

HERSHEY — For the second year in a row, Tulpehocken and Camp Hill met in the District 3 Class 1A boys soccer championship match.

After the Trojans were victorious last year, the Lions got their revenge on Wednesday night, winning 2-1 to capture the title at Hersheypark Stadium. It is just the third time this season that Tulpehocken allowed an opponent to score two or more goals.

“I thought we played very well,” Trojans coach Trevor Brown said. “It was the two best teams in the district going at it for the second year in a row. They’re a handful, we’re a handful — it was just two heavyweights going back and forth.”

The winning goal was scored by Camp Hill’s Marko Balic on a successful penalty kick with just under four minutes to play in the second half. Balic blasted a low shot into the bottom-left corner of the net to break a 1-1 tie.

The penalty kick was given as a result of a foul called within Tulpehocken’s 18-yard box. No card was administered.

Brown had no comment regarding the referees or the play following the game.

The Trojans (16-5-2) opened the scoring just before halftime with a goal from Erick Sanchez-Corona. Nicholas Paul-Chandia was credited with the assist.

The first half was even between the two sides. Play resided largely in the midfield, and both teams played lock-down defense.

“I thought we held our own,” Brown said. “I thought we played well enough to win.”

Camp Hill (18-3) found the equalizer midway through the first half on a goal by Liam Raney. Cole Nelson had the assist.

“We had one mental lapse,” Brown said. “You can’t do that against a great team.”

Aside from the game-winning penalty kick, the two teams played evenly for nearly the entire second half. Prime scoring chances were hard to come by throughout, and both teams struggled to generate on-target shots.

Tulpehocken will continue its season in the state playoffs, which begin Tuesday. Brown said he believes his team will not be short on motivation.

“This is a bitter pill to swallow,” Brown said. “We’re gutted with this, we’re ticked off with this. I think it’s going to fuel us just fine for states.”
