Twin Valley hires Doug Myer as new girls basketball coach

Doug Myer, who guided Wilson to five Berks League and three District 3 titles, was hired Monday night as the new girls basketball coach by the Twin Valley School Board.

Myer, a 1990 Wilson graduate, had a 338-167 record from 2000-18 as the Bulldogs girls basketball coach before his controversial firing.

He coached such Wilson standouts as Vanessa Rivera, Carley Brew, Jessie Wallace, Avery Marz and Zakiyah Winfield.

Myer guided the Bulldogs to Berks championships in 2006, ’08, ’12, ’13 and ’14 and District 3 Class 4A crowns in 2008, ’13 and ’14.

He replaces Mark Morrow, who resigned earlier this year after coaching the Raiders to a 121-45 record in six seasons, five appearances in the Berks playoffs, six in the District 3 playoffs and four in the PIAA Tournament. Twin Valley went 17-8 and reached the District 3 Class 5A quarterfinals last season.

Myer also was the Wilson cross country coach and an assistant track and field coach before he was suspended from coaching duties in April 2018 after he held a voluntary run on a snow day when all school activities were canceled.

He eventually lost all three coaching jobs. At that time, the Wilson School Board was flooded with requests to reinstate Myer. The board rehired him as cross country coach for the 2018 season.

In February 2019, Myer was suspended from teaching Advanced Placement calculus for an undisclosed reason. His absence from the classroom prompted community members to attend a board meeting in early March of that year and raise concerns about the future of the calculus program.

Less than a week later, the Wilson School District announced through an email that Myer would be reinstated for the remainder of the 2018-19 school year and that the process to hire a new calculus teacher for the 2019-20 school year would begin.

A week later, the board voted to accept a resignation submitted by Myer, effective at the end of the school year.

In June, Myer asked the board to rescind his resignation. The board declined and hired his replacement in front of more than 100 Myer supporters.

The Wilson board consistently declined to say why Myer was removed from the classroom.

Myer, who has been teaching at Reading High, has been hired as a math teacher at Twin Valley.
