Twin Valley names Leah Karwic April Intern of the Month

Twin Valley High School named Leah Karwic Twin Valley’s April Intern of the Month.

Leah interns at Tower Health’s Reading Hospital Emergency Department with her mentor, Dr. Brian Lahmann, the chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine. She chose to intern there because she was already familiar with Dr. Lahmann and she is interested in science and medicine.

On a typical day, Leah follows her attending doctor, usually Dr. Lahmann, as he does patient rounds. She is only able to observe, but afterward, he gives her insight into anything she didn’t understand and lets her ask questions. On days when he has other responsibilities, such as meetings, she follows around other doctors with whom she loves learning.

“The most rewarding parts are when he does something that I’ve never seen him do before. He called in a specialist the other day and he called it ‘phoning a friend.’  He’s so competent about everything.”

Leah enjoys working with him and admires his casual rapport and kindness with his patients.

She’s been able to learn important life skills from him that she can use in any environment inside or outside the emergency room. The one that sticks out the most to Leah is assuming the best while thinking critically.

She says patients “may not be telling the full story; you’re still trying to put your best foot forward and make sure everybody feels respected.”

Leah is looking to go into undergraduate scientific research and possibly explore a career medicine-adjacent, meaning her internship will provide valuable experience. She believes that if she becomes a medical professional that does not directly interact with patients, this internship will help remind her of the people she is trying to help.

“It was a wonderful experience to have Leah as my intern,” said Dr. Lahmann. “During our time she was able to observe various medical careers and understand more about emergency medicine.”
