Union striker Julian Carranza completes move to Dutch club Feyenoord

Julian Carranza was officially unveiled Sunday by Dutch club Feyenoord, ending 2 1/2 successful seasons with the Union.

His contract length in the Netherlands is undisclosed, as were the official terms of the transfer. The Union are likely to receive only a nominal fee for Carranza, whose contract was set to expire at the end of the season, when he could’ve moved on as a free transfer, but retain a sell-on percentage for future sales on the continent.

The 24-year-old was a big part of the Union reaching MLS Cup final in 2022 and sustaining success last year. He scored 34 goals and 15 assists in 74 league appearances (67 starts). He departs fourth in Union history in goals and 11th in assists in MLS play.

Carranza scored 14 goals and nine assists in 2022, then 14 and 6 in 2023. He has six goals in 11 starts this season in the league, plus four in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. He last played for the Union May 25 while the deal materialized. The Union are 0-4-2 since then.

All told, Carranza scored 42 goals and 16 assists in all competitions, the goal figure third-most in franchise history.

“Julian has accomplished a great amount in his time with the Union,” sporting director Ernst Tanner said in a press release. “We initially brought him in after seeing his potential to fit our aggressive style of play and were pleased at how quickly he developed and adapted. He has been an integral part of our success, and we are grateful for all he has contributed both on and off the field, but this is the right move for the player as he continues his development and the best move for the club as we look to make adjustments heading towards the summer transfer window.”

Carranza was pilfered from Inter Miami in December 2021 for a draft pick then permanently acquired the following July. He had been one of Miami’s first signings from Banfield in Argentina but made just 11 starts in two seasons.

Feyenoord will play Champions League soccer this year after finishing second in the Eredivisie. The 16-time Dutch champions have a history for developing players and most recently won the title in 2023.
