Unique Snacks reports double-digit sales increase in 2023

Unique Snacks has reported double-digit growth in 2023, in a pattern of expansion that executives say is slated to continue as the company focuses on increasing sales and cultivating its product line.

The 103-year-old, Muhlenberg Township-based snack manufacturer reported an 18% year-over-year increase in brick-and-mortar sales for 2023, as well as a 20% increase in Amazon sales.

“The company has seen double-digit growth for multiple years in a row,” said Justin Spannuth, chief operating officer of Unique Snacks. “I think that will actually be the standard, if not the low standard, with everything we’ve got going on here.”

Unique Snacks reported a 13% increase in sales in 2022, Spannuth noted.

“Everything that we’re doing has been growing internally, getting ourselves more organized internally, product development, sales team growth,” Spannuth said. “We have some good core products that we were able to expand across the country and get into new markets. We’ve expanded our sales team and will continue to do so.”

He said the company is focusing on restructuring internally.

That restructuring has involved the promotion of Norm Cross to vice president of brand sales and marketing and Jacob Merrill to director of e-commerce.

The company employs 90 but plans to take on another 10 workers throughout the year, mostly in office positions and sales, Spannuth said.

“This is a continued reinvestment into our corporate organization, how we go to market, how we plan to expand and grow,” Spannuth said.

Part of Unique’s growth came from the introduction of a new product — Puffzels, a puffed snack that resembles a cheese curl but is shaped like a pretzel.

Puffzels are selling in over 25 retail chains — including Shoprite, Giant Eagle, Safeway Mid-Atlantic, Tops and Sprouts — that encompass more than 1,871 stores nationwide, Unique said in a release.

Also responsible for Unique’s growth was its expansion in the drugstore realm, with the company adding accounts with Walgreens and CVS this year, the release said.

In addition, Unique made inroads in the convenience store space, working with Stewart’s Shops, Quick Chek and other chains to make pretzels and Puffzels available as grab-and-go options.

Spannuth said Unique’s footprint has been expanding significantly in the New England area.

He noted that another pretzel-based product line is in development, with other products also in the works.

“We’ll have, most likely, at least some sort of line expansion or new product once a year,” Spannuth said. “That’s the goal.”
