United Way of Berks County recently launched its 100th-anniversary celebration at the YMCA, which is a long-standing community partner. Joni Naugle, board chair, and Tammy White, president, provided comments about the organization’s century of impact, progress, and service.

“The organization’s strength comes from uniting individuals, organizations, and resources to work for the greater good,” shared Naugle. United Way’s 80+ funded programs focus on education, empowering families to become financially stable, helping people live healthier lives, and providing a range of safety net services.

United Way’s commitment to early learning was highlighted. Investing in children’s education is one of the most powerful ways to build a thriving community—unlocking opportunities that extend for generations—that is why United Way invests in programs around quality childcare, school readiness, school success, and positive youth development. One of those investments is through the YMCA childcare program, one of eight childcare centers United Way has worked with to achieve a Pennsylvania STAR 4 rating, the highest recognition. The centers are recognized for excellence in early learning and connecting thousands of children to high-quality learning and kindergarten preparedness.

Additional anniversary events will be held throughout the year, including a tree planting on Monday, April 14, at Gring’s Mill, a 100th Birthday Bash dinner at the DoubleTree on Thursday, April 24, and a time capsule ceremony at the end of the year.
