As United Way of Berks County celebrates its 100th anniversary, special activities are planned to celebrate its founding month and a century of service to the community.

Upcoming Events:

Event: Legacy Tree Planting

Date: Monday, April 14, at 3:30 p.m. (Rain date: Wednesday, April 16, at 3:30 p.m.)

Location: Gring’s Mill (near the main entrance parking lot)

The special tree planting takes place on United Way’s founding day and symbolizes the organization’s enduring legacy and commitment to the community. The white oak tree serves as a living reminder of growth, resilience, and hope – values that define the organization’s work. The event is supported by the County of Berks, with the tree donated by New Castle Lawn and Landscape, in memory of Irv Evans, one of United Way’s longest-serving volunteers.

Remarks from United Way and County of Berks leadership will be featured. The public is invited to attend; all are invited to write a wish for the community on tags, which will be tied to the tree.

Event: Anniversary Flag Raising

Date: Tuesday, April 15, at 10 a.m.

Location: City Park (Flag Area is located by the basketball courts along Columbus Drive)

A special commemorative flag, symbolizing unity and a century of dedication to improving lives and strengthening our community, will be raised by Mayor Moran, City of Reading, along with representatives from United Way of Berks County. The flag honors United Way’s rich history of dedication to improving lives and serving as a cornerstone of positive change in our community.

Event: Community Volunteer Projects

Several corporate employee teams are volunteering with varied volunteer projects in honor of United Way’s anniversary. Projects include painting, outdoor projects, and renovation projects.

These activities reflect United Way’s century-long commitment to Berks County.

  • Monday, April 14, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Reading Hospital Employee Team – painting, serving lunch, and outdoor clean-up projects at Hope Rescue Mission, 645 N. 6th St., Reading.
  • Tuesday, April 15, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.: Tompkins Bank team – gardening and outdoor projects at SafeBerks, 255 Chestnut St., Reading.
  • Wednesday, April 16, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Diamond Credit Union team – renovation projects at Habitat for Humanity site, 424 Miltimore St., Reading.
