As part of its 100th anniversary celebration, United Way of Berks County is making its annual Big Cheese event even bigger. From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, June 13, and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 14, 1,000 volunteers will gather at Penn State Berks’ Beaver Athletics and Wellness Center to pack 500,000 nutritionally fortified meals for local families facing food insecurity.
“For 100 years, United Way has stood for help, hope, and opportunity — bringing people together to improve lives and strengthen our community,” said Tammy White, President of United Way of Berks County. “In honor of our centennial, we’re doubling the impact of this major volunteer event. It’s a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we work together.”
Now in its ninth year, The Bigger Big Cheese reflects the spirit of community at its best — neighbors lifting one another up, working side by side, and creating lasting impact.
“Too many families in Berks County continue to struggle with food insecurity. That’s why more than 1,000 volunteers eagerly signed up to pack meals, united by a shared purpose and a desire to make a difference,” added White. “Thanks to their efforts, an ordinary day becomes one filled with service, energy, and heart. We’re especially grateful to FirstEnergy Foundation, our title sponsor, and to Members 1st for their support. This is what it means to help children and families thrive.”
The meals will be distributed through Helping Harvest, with a portion allocated directly to Reading School District to help students in need throughout the year.
United Way is once again partnering with The Outreach Program, a national nonprofit that supports local food-packing events across the country. Each meal includes dry ingredients to make approximately six servings and costs just 25 cents. Funding for the event is provided through United Way’s Community Impact budget and generous support from corporate and community partners.
