Upper Macungie police shoot snake to save man being strangled by it

Officers rescued a man from a snake wrapped around his neck, Upper Macungie police said Wednesday afternoon.

Police responded at 2:12 p.m. Wednesday to a report of a 28-year-old Fogelsville, Lehigh County, man suffering from cardiac arrest with a snake wrapped around his neck in a home in the 1400 block of Church Street, according to a news release.

The snake’s midsection was wrapped around the man, police said, but it was large enough — estimated to be at least 15 feet — that an officer was able to shoot the snake’s head without hurting the man. Officers were then able to pull the man from the snake’s grasp, and provided the man with medical attention before transferring him to a local hospital.

His condition is unknown, police said. The snake was killed.
