West Reading looks in-house for new police chief

For the second time in less than a year, West Reading has a new police chief.

At a ceremony at borough hall Monday evening, Wayne Holben was sworn in as the new leader of the West Reading Police Department.

Holben is a 22-year member of the department who has served as a criminal investigator since 2018 and as a sergeant since 2019. He has acted as a field training officer and was in charge of the department’s K-9 unit for 17 years.

Holben is a 2000 graduate of Alvernia University.

Holben replaces Glenn Granitz Jr., who resigned Dec. 13 after serving as chief for less than six months. Granitz was sworn in on June 28, 2021, to replace Stephen Powell, who resigned in December 2020 to take a job as deputy chief in Spring Township.

Granitz told borough officials that he was resigning to take a job in the private sector.
