West Reading man identified as security guard fatally shot, Berks coroner says

A West Reading man was the person killed when he and another man were shot while they went to investigate a suspicious vehicle while working as a security guard in the Morgantown area, the Berks County coroners office said Monday morning.

An autopsy is underway to determine the cause and manner of death for Troy A. Rickenbach, 37, Chief County Coroner George Holmes said.

Rickenbach was pronounced dead at the scene in the borough of New Morgan at 3:18 a.m. Saturday by Deputy Coroner Joseph Pothering.

Another security guard was wounded. That man was described by state police as a 43-year-old.

Police and ambulance crews responded to the scene along Quarry Road in New Morgan shortly after midnight Saturday.

Medics staged nearby until they were called in by state police to view the scene, according to emergency reports.

State police in a press release later Saturday said that a man called 911 shortly after midnight and explained to troopers that he worked in security at 235 Quarry Road and that there was a suspicious vehicle on the property.

Troopers didn’t specify how the guards were shot.

The 43-year-old was treated for a gunshot wound to an arm, investigators said.

Troopers didn’t provide the name of the business and a search of county records yielded no listing for a business at that address, but there are manufacturing plants in the vicinity.

Troopers haven’t provided an update.

Investigators are urging anyone with information to contact the Reading station at 610-378-4011 or leave a tip with Crime Alert Berks County at 1-877-373-9913. The crime-fighting group pays up to $10,000 for tips that lead to an arrest.
