Who to watch, what to know for Tuesday’s PIAA field hockey first-round games involving Berks teams

Class 1A first round: 11-2 Palisades at 3-1 Oley Valley, 6 p.m.

Class 2A first round: 1-4 Upper Perkiomen at 3-1 Twin Valley, 5 p.m. 3-5 Fleetwood at 7-1 Penn Trafford, 7 p.m.

Class 3A first round: 3-4 Wilson at 1-2 Garnet Valley, 7 p.m.

Oley Valley (21-2) vs. Palisades (14-8-1)

The Lynx

Who to watch: Junior Tetje Williamson has nine goals and six assists and was voted to the All-Berks Team.

What to know: Won 10th District 3 title. … Finished second in last PIAA appearance in 2019. … Won PIAA titles in 1997 and 2000.

The Pirates

Who to watch: Forward Morgan Magditch is the catalyst of the Pirates’ offense..

What to know: Lost to Palmerton in District 11 championship game. … Making first trip to state tournament since 1989.

Winner meets: Lancaster Mennonite or Shady Side Academy on Saturday.

Twin Valley (23-2) vs. Upper Perkiomen (20-3-1)

The Raiders

Who to watch: Saint Joseph’s-bound senior Emma Winther ranks second in Berks with 35 assists to go with 26 goals and was voted to the All-Berks Team for the second straight season.

What to know: Won first District 3 title. … Won second straight Berks title. … Won PIAA Class 2A title in 2015.

The Indians

Who to watch: Takoda Wells scored the winning goal in overtime when Upper Perkiomen defeated Twin Valley 2-1 on Oct. 15.

What to know: Finished fourth in District 1. … Captured third straight Pioneer Athletic Conference title. … 2006 PIAA Class 2A runner-up.

Winner meets: Archbishop John Carroll or Hershey on Saturday..

Fleetwood (18-5) vs. Penn Trafford (16-0)

The Tigers

Who to watch: Senior Casey Lynn Dewald, a two-time All-Berks selection, set a Fleetwood single-season record with 47 goals and has 127 for her career

What to know: Placed fifth in District 3 Tournament. … Making first state playoff appearance since 2011.

The Warriors

Who to watch: Sophomore Ava Hershberger set the Penn Trafford record for goals in a season with 39.

What to know: Won sixth straight District 7 championship. … Lost 3-1 to Selinsgrove in last year’s quarterfinals. … Lost to Twin Valley in first round in 2019 and ’18.

Winner meets: Mechanicsburg or Merion Mercy on Saturday.

Wilson (17-6) vs. Garnet Valley (18-4)

The  Bulldogs

Who to watch: Junior midfielder Erika Culp has 13 goals and 10 assists and was voted to the All-Berks Team

What to know: Finished fourth in District 3. … Won PIAA Class 3A title in 2019.

The Jaguars

Who to watch: Junior Riley Gallagher sparks the Garnet Valley offense.

What to know: Lost 2-1 to Conestoga in District 1 championship game. … Lost to Emmaus in PIAA first round in 2019.

Winner meets: Pine Richland or Central York on Saturday.
