From Widoktadwen Center for Native Knowledge
The Widoktadwen Center for Native Knowledge is thrilled to announce the launch of a new Native Book Club, dedicated to exploring and celebrating contemporary Indigenous stories and voices. This exciting initiative aims to foster community, encourage meaningful discussion, and broaden understanding of Native perspectives through literature.
All are welcome to join the Widoktadwen Native Book Club. Whether you are new to Indigenous literature or a long-time reader, this club offers a unique opportunity to connect with diverse stories and engage in stimulating conversations. The book club will meet at varying locations throughout Berks County, providing accessibility and engagement opportunities for residents across the region.
“We are incredibly excited to launch this Native Book Club and create a dedicated space for contemporary Indigenous literature,” said Amanda Funk, Executive Director at Widoktadwen Center for Native Knowledge. “There is a wealth of incredible storytelling happening within Native communities today, and we look forward to sharing these powerful narratives and fostering enriching conversations right here in Berks County.”
The inaugural meeting of the Widoktadwen Native Book Club will be held on Friday, July 18, at 6 p.m., at the Sinking Spring Public Library. The first book selection is Empire of Wild by Cherie Dimaline. Dimaline, a member of the Métis Nation of Ontario, is a critically acclaimed author known for her compelling and imaginative storytelling. Empire of Wild is a captivating novel that blends Indigenous folklore with contemporary themes, promising a thought-provoking discussion for the club’s first gathering.
August’s Native Book Club meeting will be Monday, Aug. 25, at 5 p.m., at Exeter Community Library and will feature the new release Love Is a War Song by Danica Nava.
