Williams Valley school board member steps down

Another Williams Valley school board member has resigned.

The board at its Jan. 11 meeting discussed the departure of board treasurer William Smith, effective retroactively to Dec. 19.
Smith joined the board in January 2020 and served as treasurer starting in 2021.

Smith, who left the board for personal reasons, was absent for the recent meeting, but fellow members, including David Ferraro, offered praise.

“I would like to thank Bill Smith for his years of service with this district,” he said. “He has done a lot for the students of the district, and he will be missed.”

Smith’s replacement will be Joseph D’Agostino.

Also at the meeting, it was confirmed that board member Michael Leiter would be serving the position former president John Mika held with the Schuylkill Intermediate Unit and Schuylkill Technology Center.

Mika resigned from the board in June; his term expires in June 2026. Leiter began serving in August 2022.

In other news, it was announced that the district will start an elementary version of its Viking Closet program, led by nurse Ashley Keiter and members of the parent-teacher organization.

The original Viking Closet program began with an anonymous $5,000 donation in January 2021 and has blossomed into a prominent service provided by the district under the direction of Brian Unger.

The room for this sister program will be determined by how much space is needed.
