Wilson defeats Exeter in girls volleyball

Wilson continued to cement its position as the top team in Division I of the Berks Girls Volleyball League on Thursday night.

The defending Berks champions defeated Exeter 3-1 (25-20, 24-26, 25-18, 25-12) on Senior Night at West Lawn — the Bulldogs fourth straight victory over the Eagles dating to last season, including in the 2020 county final.

Before that, the Bulldogs went 0-8 vs. the Eagles during Exeter’s run to four straight division and Berks titles from 2016-19.

“It’s important that we continue to establish that mindset that we can beat them and they know that they can’t beat us,” Bulldogs head coach Denny Werner said. “That’s the mindset we want to keep going forward with.”

Wilson (11-0, 13-1) took the first set before the Eagles (7-4, 8-5) responded in the second set. The Bulldogs were plagued by offensive miscues late in the second set, and Exeter took advantage.

“It was gritty tonight,” Werner said. “We had to fight tonight a little bit. Things weren’t pretty, but sometimes that’s where you have to win.”

The two sides were evenly matched early in the third set before Wilson began to gain momentum and pull away. The Bulldogs passed the ball cleanly, and the offense began to execute more consistently, as they won the third set 25-18 and the fourth set 25-12.

“We got the ball to the setter [and] we could distribute the ball to the offense and get some big swings much more consistently in that third set,” Werner said. “That was the difference, and we kind of carried that to the end.”

Kassidy Means had 20 kills, 15 digs and four aces for Wilson. Also for the Bulldogs, Cameryn Niedrowski had 40 assists, seven digs and two aces, and Airyanna Kline had 11 kills and four blocks.

For Exeter, Madelyn Forry had 13 kills, 13 digs and three aces, Riley Mack had 10 kills and 10 digs, and Jenna Gehris had 21 assists, three aces and seven digs.
