Wilson defeats Hempfield in high school football with last-minute touchdown

With three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter of a tie game, Wilson began its drive deep in its own territory.

Relying on their rushing attack, the Bulldogs marched down the field before running back Jadyn Jones scored a 14-yard rushing touchdown with 32 seconds remaining. The score proved to be the game-winning touchdown as Wilson hung on for the 28-21 victory over Hempfield in a Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 1 matchup on Friday night in Landisville.

“He wanted the ball,” Bulldogs head coach Doug Dahms said about Jones. “That’s what you want out of your running back.”

Led by Jones and quarterback Brad Hoffman, the Bulldogs’ game-winning drive lasted seven plays and went for 78 yards. The score was Wilson’s only touchdown of the second half.

“That’s a two-headed monster running the ball,” Dahms said. “That’s our bread-and-butter right now.”

Jones finished with 139 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns. Hoffman ran for 131 yards and threw for 50. He ran for a touchdown and passed for one.

“He did a really nice job,” Dahms said about Hoffman. “He ran tough.”

The Bulldogs registered 280 yards rushing, in large part thanks to a strong performance by their offensive line. Wilson had only a few carries in which it lost yards.

“Our offensive line has gotten better, they’re getting more physical,” Dahms said. “Up front, we’re moving people.”

Wilson jumped to an early 7-0 lead and later extended it to 21-7 midway through the second quarter. However, the Black Knights responded, putting together a 76-yard scoring drive, capped with a touchdown run from Stephen Katch to make it 21-14 before halftime.

After a scoreless third quarter, Hempfield tied it early in the fourth. Quarterback Cam Harbaugh connected with Andy Garcia on a 68-yard touchdown pass with just under nine minutes remaining.

The Black Knights had one final opportunity in the game’s final seconds. Harbaugh’s Hail Mary pass went out the back of the end zone and was ruled incomplete.

With the result, the Bulldogs (4-0, 6-3) have won four straight after starting the season 2-3. They remain in sole possession of first place in Section 1.

The winning streak also has put Wilson back into the conversation for the District 3 playoffs, which will feature eight teams. The Bulldogs entered Friday eighth in the District 3 Class 6A power rankings, right behind No. 6 Hempfield and No. 7 Manheim Township — who they will play next week.

“We have everybody now — everybody’s back, everybody’s healthy,” Dahms said of his team’s recent success. “They’re starting to learn how to play together, which is a big part of it.”
