Wilson downs Gov. Mifflin with last-minute goal in girls soccer

With under a minute remaining in regulation in a scoreless contest, Wilson generated its best offensive attack of the night.

The Bulldogs pushed the ball up the field before Natalee Vicari found Macy McDonough, who fired a shot into the bottom corner of the net with 33 seconds remaining. The goal lifted Wilson over Gov. Mifflin 1-0 Tuesday night in a Berks Girls Soccer League Division I game at West Lawn.

“That was huge,” Bulldogs coach Tim Fick said. “That was probably our best goal-scoring chance of the night.”

The shot was one of just a few strong scoring chances that either side had with play mostly in midfield. Prime opportunities to find the back of the net were difficult to come by.

Wilson (9-0, 13-1-1) outshot the Mustangs (6-2, 9-4) 11-3, but most of the shots lacked an advantageous speed or placement. Gov. Mifflin goalkeeper Taylor Koenig made 10 saves.

The Bulldogs possessed the ball on the Mustangs’ side of the field for the majority of the game, but the Mifflin’s defense did not allow many offensive attacks to develop. Both sides had some longer offensive runs in the second half, leading to the lone goal.

“It was a solid performance,” Fick said. “[I’m] ecstatic we got the win.”
