A big fourth quarter lifted Wilson over Twin Valley on Friday night.
Leading by just one point at the end of the third quarter, the Bulldogs outscored the Raiders by eight in the fourth to complete a 36-27 victory in a Berks Girls Basketball League Division I-II matchup at West Lawn.
“We had to match their toughness,” Wilson coach Chris Gallo said. “I didn’t think we backed down from it.”
Points were hard to come by in a very physical affair featuring two stout defenses. Thirty-six points is the fewest the Bulldogs (5-2 Berks I, 10-4) have scored in a win this season.
“Both teams guard so well, it makes it tough to score,” Gallo said. “I’m proud of how we battled.”
Wilson led 26-25 through three quarters before ending the game on a 10-2 run. Senior Amiyah Nguyen led the Bulldogs with five points in the fourth quarter.
“Amiyah always plays hard,” Gallo said. “On both ends tonight, again, she went hard.”
Nguyen and senior Keira Levengood each scored 10 points for Wilson. Junior Sarah Gowman led Twin Valley with nine points.
The Bulldogs were ahead 15-7 after one quarter and led for the rest of the game. They led 22-14 at halftime.
“We didn’t play a very good first half,” Raiders coach Doug Myer said. “We knew that at halftime.”
Twin Valley (5-2 Berks II, 10-5) chipped away in the third quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs 11-4 to cut it to just one point. However, the Raiders could not carry the momentum into the fourth quarter, scoring just two points in the final eight minutes.
“We fought our way back into the game,” Myer said. “We just couldn’t quite maintain that intensity in the fourth quarter on either end.”
Friday’s game marked the return to Wilson for Myer, who coached the Bulldogs from 2000-2018. He is in his first season at the helm at Twin Valley.
“A lot of great memories here, but I didn’t mention (it) to our kids a single time going into the game,” Myer said. “We just came here trying to win a game.”
