Wilson girls pull out overtime victory in District 3 soccer playoffs

Less than a minute away from what would have been a devastating loss, Wilson found a way to keep its season alive.

Trailing by a goal for much of the second half, the third-seeded Bulldogs were about ready to make an unexpected early exit in a District 3 Girls Soccer Tournament Class 4A first round game against No. 14 Cedar Crest.

But senior Keira Levengood scored the tying goal with 45 seconds left in regulation and senior Natalee Vicari scored in overtime to lift Wilson to a 3-2 victory.

“There was a lot of emotion,” Vicari said. “I think from everyone there was a little doubt during regulation time.”

Wilson (20-1-1), coming off a Berks County championship win over Wyomissing on Saturday, looked a little sluggish in the first half. But the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead when Vicari assisted on a goal by Elizabeth Estrada.

Cedar Crest tied it early in the second half on a goal by Alaina Miller, then took the lead with 21:30 left on a goal by Abrielle Miller.

Wilson had very limited chances until the closing minute. Levengood banged a shot off the cross bar and followed it up with a header to save Wilson’s season.

The Bulldogs dominated in overtime. Estrada sent a ball off the crossbar early in the extra period. About a minute later, Estrada got the ball to Vicari in open space and Vicari booted the ball into the back of the net with only 3:16 gone in overtime.
