Wilson gives Matt Coldren school record with victory over Berks Catholic

Matt Coldren had to wait 21 seasons to break his mentor’s coaching record at Wilson.

What was another two minutes Tuesday night?

The Bulldogs nearly squandered an eight-point lead in the final two minutes before Aidan Melogrona’s layup in the final seconds sealed a tense 51-48 victory over Berks Catholic in a Berks I basketball game.

Cam Jones scored 21 points, including 12 in the second half, as Wilson (2-3, 7-4) gave the 50-year-old Coldren his 363rd victory, one more than longtime Bulldogs coach Reggie Weiss.

“He’s the guy I wanted to be,” Coldren said about Weiss, who watched from the stands. “I became a coach and a teacher because I wanted to be like him. That’s the biggest credit I can give him.

“I owe everything that I’m doing to him.”

The won-loss records of Coldren and Weiss are almost identical. Coldren, who played for Weiss, has a 363-171 record; Weiss had a 362-165 mark in 21 seasons.

“I’m at a loss for words,” Jones said, regarding Coldren’s record. “He’s been here for a while. He’s worked hard to get where he is. It’s kind of a dream come true for him, to surpass your coach in wins. It’s something you want to accomplish as a coach, especially at your alma mater.”

Berks Catholic (3-2, 8-2) didn’t make it easy, especially one player in particular. Ryan Koch poured in a career-high 27 points and made three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. Josiah Jordan had 12 points before fouling out.

The Bulldogs also made just 6-of-14 free throws in the fourth to increase the drama.

Jack Miller made four free throws in the final 40 seconds to cut Wilson’s lead to one twice.

After his second set of free throws with 9.4 seconds to go, Melogrona broke free against fullcourt pressure and scored the clinching layup.

Moments later, Cauldron was recognized at halfcourt and presented the game ball by Weiss.

“I didn’t know I was close until the Gov. Mifflin game,” Coldren said. “That’s when we started struggling. It’s young group I believe in. We’re talented but we’re not game savvy. They didn’t make tonight easy.”
