Wilson wins, Gov. Mifflin falls in PIAA Class 3A girls lacrosse tournament

Wilson defeated District 1 runner-up Springfield (Delco) 12-11 while Gov. Mifflin fell 24-6 to Garnet Valley in the opening round of the PIAA Class 3A girls lacrosse tournament Tuesday.

The Bulldogs (18-6), the third-place team from District 3, will take on District 7 champion Shady Side Academy Saturday in a quarterfinal, site and time to be announced. Shady Side beat Hempfield 8-5 Tuesday.

The District 3 runner-up Mustangs (15-8) were making their first appearance in the PIAA Tournament.

At Springfield, Wilson overcame a 6-3 halftime deficit by outscoring the Cougars 9-5 in the second half. Ainsley McLain scored a team-high six goals, all in the second half, for the Bulldogs.

Springfield, the District 1 runner-up, opened the second-half scoring, but Wilson answered just over a minute later when McLain scored her first goal with 21:06 remaining.

With the Cougars leading 7-4, the Bulldogs outscored the Cougars 6-2 over the next 10 minutes. They took a 10-9 lead on a McLain goal with 12:03 remaining.

Springfield scored the next two goals to go up 11-10. McLain tied it with 5:55 left, then scored the winner with 2:31 remaining.

For Wilson, Alexa Kairis scored three goals and had two assists, Kayla Wilkes scored two goals and had one assist and Audrey Miller scored one goal and had an assist.

Maria Sasaran had three saves and Kayla Carse had four for the Bulldogs.

At Shillington, Garnet Valley, the third-place team from District 1, advanced to face Owen J. Roberts, which earned a forfeit win over District 12 champ Central. No detail were reported.
