The title of top quarterback in Berks is wide open after the graduation of Wilson’s Tommy Hunsicker.
The Berks Player of the Year in 2023, Hunsicker led the Bulldogs in passing and rushing.
He completed 156-of-241 passes (64.7%) for 2,230 yards and 24 touchdowns with four interceptions. He ran for 509 yards and eight TDs on 130 carries.
He’s taken his all-around football abilities to Millersville where he’s listed as a quarterback on the Marauders’ roster.
That leaves the race to be the top signal caller in the county up for grabs, with several starters returning from a year ago.
Here’s four players who could claim to be the best by the end of the season.
Evan Myers, Twin Valley, Sr. — Myers, selected as Berks first team athlete last year, is in charge of one of the most high-powered offenses in Berks.
He passed for 1,503 yards (106-of-179 passes) and nine touchdowns last year. He also carried the ball 88 times for 580 yards and 10 touchdowns, which are very impressive stats when you consider the Raiders also had two 1,000-yard rushers in Drew Engle and Evan Johnson, both of whom return this season.
That’s a lot of offensive weapons for a team that has aspirations at the league, county and state level.
Tyler Shuey, Hamburg, Sr. — Like Myers, Shuey has a lot of talent around him. Shuey had a fantastic year in 2023 and if not for Hunsicker, the talk of a top quarterback would have certainly featured him. He led Berks in passing yards with 2,775 yards, completing 168 passes of 299 passes, and throwing 25 touchdowns. He could also run with the ball, registering 539 yards and scoring 11 touchdowns.
With senior Ty Werley returning as one of Berks’ top receivers and running back Blaise Ernst ready to carry the rushing load, Shuey could be in for a big senior season.
Logan Nawrocki, Schuylkill Valley, Sr. — Nawrocki was part of a junior class of quarterbacks last season that was exciting to watch. Like Shuey, he passed for more than 2,000 yards (2,006) and found the end zone often, tossing 23 touchdown passes. He completed 127 of 229 attempts and was only intercepted seven times.
With his top target, Kowen Gerner, returning, Nawrocki is certainly in the conversation to be Berks’ top QB.
Donovan Gingrich, Conrad Weiser, Sr. — At 6-1, 200 pounds, Conrad Weiser coach Alan Moyer says he won’t be afraid to call Gingrich’s number often … to run the ball. If defenses need to worry about him running, his passing stats could get even better. Gingrich has thrown for 2,431 yards and 23 touchdowns during his time as a starter, and last season threw for 962 yards, 10 touchdowns and four interceptions.
