Wyomissing defeats West Perry to win fifth straight District 3 Class 3A football championship

The individual statistics rarely earn much attention.

But when added together, the Wyomissing football team usually comes up with something “pretty special.”

Five different players scored touchdowns Saturday afternoon to help Wyomissing overpower West Perry 42-14 to earn its fifth straight District 3 Class 3A football championship.

Wyomissing’s top rusher, Chase Eisenhower, ran for just 73 yards. But 13 different rushers combined to rack up 319 yards on the ground to help the Spartans (11-1) rout West Perry (11-2) in the District 3 championship game for the second straight year at Bob Wolfrum Field.

The victory advances Wyomissing to the PIAA quarterfinals to face District 4 champion Danville Friday or Saturday at a site in Berks County, but not at Wyomissing.

“We never have anybody that has a lot of yardage as far as county stats go because we run six or seven different backs in most games,” said Wyomissing coach Bob Wolfrum. “I call the X’s and O’s, (assistant coach) Frank (Ferrandino) rotates the players in and out. So I don’t know who’s carrying the ball when I call the play.”

It didn’t matter.

Ryker Jones rushed for two touchdowns, including a 48-yarder in the opening minute of the second half that staked Wyomissing to a 35-0 lead. Jones also opened the scoring with a 4-yard TD run in the first quarter when the Spartans went 72 yards in 11 plays — all on the ground — following an Ethan Brower interception.

“We definitely wanted to set the tone early,” Jones said. “That’s what we did.”

Wyomissing, which defeated West Perry 63-7 in last year’s district championship game, dominated from there. The Spartans were never forced to punt and took a knee inside the West Perry 5 three times in the closing minutes.

The final quarter was marred by several unsportsmanlike conduct penalties that resulted in the ejection of three Mustangs.

“We had a lot of confidence,” Jones said. “We have a really good team again this year. If all 11 guys do their jobs, we’re really tough to stop.”

Collin Niedrowski scored on a 1-yard dive, Marvin Armistead raced 26 yards for a score and Justice Hardy hauled in a 16-yard pass from Logan Hyde to give Wyomissing a 28-0 halftime lead.

It was just one of three passes thrown by Hyde.

Eisenhower, who didn’t reach the end zone on offense, rambled 86 yards with an interception in the third quarter for Wyomissing’s final touchdown.

West Perry quarterback Marcus Quaker rushed for two touchdowns in the second half.

But they came long after Wyomissing had wrapped up another District 3 trophy with another roster of players without stunning numbers.

“This is a couple of completely different groups of kids,” Wolfrum said. “It’s pretty special.”
